P&G CMO talks to Terra about the 'Thank You Mom' Campaign
"The program is sponsoring the Olympics. We want to be the Olympic movement's top partner. We are currently one of the top 11 sponsors. We want to use this to work with the Olympics movement which works to improve the lives of other through sports and serve our purpose of improving the lives of people all around the world," said P&G CMO Marc Pritchard.
Up to 5 million dollars will be raise through the sale of specially packaged products that will include the P&G Logo and Olympic Rings including a reference to the PG.com website where consumers can get a better understanding of the program.
"The way we do this is that P&G brand will sponsor athletes but behind every athlete is an even more amazing mom," said Pritchard. "Since P&G is in the business of helping moms we want to thank moms for all they do to help raise athletes as well as thank moms all over the world by whenever you buy a P&G product, we will actually contribute to local youth sports up to 5 million dollars."
The campaign will include some of P&G's top brands and their respective sponsors including Gillette, Pampers, Pantene, Head & Shoulders, Duracell and others. Paula Radcliffe, Michael Phelps and Roger Federer are athletes already linked to the program. On the Latin American front, Brazilian soccer player Paulo Ganso is one of the top Gillette athletes participating in the program.
Latin American athletes and countries are seen as a key component to the campaign. Pritchard even admitted that the idea originated in part from the plight of Latin American kids and the region is the first place that the program has gone into effect.
"It's important to know the insight we got about youth sports actually came from Latin America. We were interviewing Latin American moms and asking them what would help you and they said, 'we would like to make sure our kids can play sports'," said Pritchard. "The problem is many of our kids can't play sports because sports equipment isn't available in their schools and so one way you can thank us is to help donate money to youth sports organizations."
The company was quick to take up the challenge and began their first implementation of the "Thank You Mom" Campaign in 2011 during the Guadalajara Pan American Games.
"We had already done that program with the Guadalajara Pan Am Games where through the Thank you Mom Sports gift we have helped 200,000 kinds in Latin America get access to sporting equipment," continued Pritchard.
P&G expects to have a global impact with their campaign with many Latin American countries like Brazil, Argentina, and Mexico expected to be one of the biggest benefactors due to their large population and buying power within the company.
The company through its participation in the Innsbruck 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Gameshas been able to reach out to Olympian moms and athletes. The program already taken some hold in Chile and helped take 40 moms from around the world to watch their children at the youth games.
"We intend to support all Olympian moms. We work with the national Olympic committees, each country has one and we work with each to understand what help moms need," said Pritchard. "We helped bring moms from around the world to the youth Olympic games in Innsbruck working with their committees, we can thank them and their athletes."
