Colombian Brigitte Merlano gave her country its first gold medal in the South American Track and Field Championship that is currently taking place in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Merlano finished with a time of 13s07 to win the 100 meters with hurdles. Her teammate Lina Marcela Florez came in third with a time of 13s23, one hundredth of a second more than the second-place finisher, Maila Paula Machado of Brazil.

After the first day of competition, Colombia had one gold, two silver, and five bronze medals. But Brazil leads the field after winning six of the 11 gold medals in this first day.

Argentina has won two gold medals, while Colombia and Chile have one each.
