Ching-Kuo Wu, president of the International Amateur Boxing Association, said that boxers in the upcoming London Olympics "could do away with the helmet," according to Chinese news agency Xinhua.
The practice is allowed in the World Series of Boxing (WSB), which is an amateur event recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). But the final decision rests with the IOC, which will study and evaluate the potential risks.
"The hardest part of the process is to change the rules to ensure the least risk possible to the possible. In this sense, the referee in the ring will be very important, as well as the presence of new materials in the gloves," Wu Said.
The 380 fights under the WSB banner are being used as a precedent, since there were no injuries reported in the events. However, Wu says he will await the analysis and recommendations that the IOC will make on the matter.
