Mexican sprinter Gabriela Medina said in Cuba on Monday that this year she hopes to break her country's record in the 800 meters set by legendary runner Ana Guevara. She also has her sights set on reaching the finals in the championship in Daegu, South Korea.

"Above all else I want to break Ana's Mexican record (2:01.16) set in the Centrocaribes of Maracaibo in 1998, and develop into the country's best runner of all time in the 800 meters," Medina told reporters before traveling back to Mexico.

Medina works with Cuban trainer Raul Barreda, who also guided the career of Guevara. Medina returned this year after an absence of a year and a half from the track. She had temporarily left the sport to give birth to her child.

"My current times tell me that I am on the right track and I know I can make it in two minutes or less," she declared.

The best time for the 26 year-old is 2:02.27 set this year in an event in the United States.

In her most recent event in Barrientos in Cuba, Medina raced a time of 2:02.66 minutes, but finished a very close third behind Cubans Diosmely Pena and Rosmary Almanza.

"In Guadalajara I want to be at the medal podium and it would be very nice if I could break Ana's record," Medina added.

"In Daegu and the London Olympics in 2012 I will not be satisfied with just being a semifinalist. I want to be among the best eight 800 meter runners in the world."
