American Allyson Felix improved her season lead in the 400 meters, while world champion Sanya Richards-Ross struggled to a fifth-place finish at the star-studded Golden Gala.

Felix is the three-time defending world champion in the 200. But she's shown this year that she could be just as big a threat in the 400.

Felix clocked 49.81 seconds Thursday to improve upon the 50.33 she ran this month at the opening Diamond League meet in Doha, Qatar. Richards-Ross finished in 50.90 after missing most of last year with a quadriceps injury.

Later, world record-holder Usain Bolt will face former holder Asafa Powell in the 100-meter race. European champion Christophe Lemaitre and Olympic silver medalist Richard Thompson also are in the field.
