The South African government announced on Thursday that it has abandoned the race to host the 2020 Summer Olympics, because the government of Pretoria did not support the proposal put forward by the country's Olympic committee.

"No Olympic movement in any country can try to hold an event without the support of the government," Gideon Sam, president of the South African Olympic Committee, said, according to website Sport 24.

Sam added that he would be willing to again present South Africa's candidacy in the next few years.

The committee announced last September to present the candidacy of the coastal city of Durban for the 2020 Games. However, that was the only city which accepted the proposal, which was knocked down by Johannesburg, Capetown, and Port Elizabeth.

At the moment, Rome is the only city in the world to officially announce its willingness to host the 2020 Olympics.
