A woman with Olympic marathon champion Samuel Wanjiru the night he fell to his death from a bedroom balcony says he may have been trying to get a key from his wife.

Jane Nduta says Wanjiru may have jumped from the bedroom balcony last week while trying to get the key for his bedroom door from his wife. His wife had locked Nduta and Wanjiru in the room when she found the two there.

The 21-year-old Nduta says if she had not gone to Wanjiru's home he may still be alive, but she adds that the runner had convinced her that his wife was not around.

Nduta says she and Wanjiru had been in a relationship for three months.

Wanjiru's victory at the 2009 Beijing Games was Kenya's first Olympic gold medal in the marathon.
