In Michigan, Phelps was 1.17 seconds behind the winner, China's Wu Peng. Phelps's first defeat in the 200m butterfly in almost a decade since Pan Pacific Championships in 2002 was none than other than in the event in which he holds the world record.
"It was obviously frustrating, because (the streak of victories in the 200m fly) was something I wanted to keep going my entire career," said the Baltimore swimmer. "I've used it as motivation."
'To be honest, it's probably what I needed,' Phelps added. "I was playing with fire, and I got burnt pretty hard, and it was a fairly big one. It's better that it came at a Grand Prix meet than at a national championship or Olympics."
At Charlotte, a competition of the USA Swimming Grand Prix that started on Thursday, the eight-time 2008 Olympic gold medalist plans to swim the 200m butterfly, 200m freestyle and 200m backstroke, where his main rival and teammate will be Ryan Lochte.
Meanwhile, Cullen Jones secured his spot on the U.S. squad for Shanghai's World Championships in July after a side-by-side battle in which he defeated Josh Schneider in the 50m freestyle on Thursday. Both swimmers had tied for second place in the National Championships held in August that was used as qualification for the World Championships.
