The sport began as a pastime in California, in the United States, in the 1920’s but immediately got attention as a legitimate sport. The first World Championship was disputed in 1976 and it was transformed into an Olympic Sport in 1996.
Beach Volleyball is played between two teams, each with two players (with no substitutions), in a sand field composed of 16x8 meters. The objective is to hit the ball over the net to touch the opposite floor. If there is an injury, athletes have a five minute recuperation period.

SandraCountry: BrazilThe first gold medalist in women's beach volleyball, along with Jackie, defeated Monica and Adriana. She would go on to win Bronze in Sydney.
