Invented in the United States by the Canadian physical education teacher, James Naismith, of the YMCA, basketball was invented as a sport that could be played indoors during the winter. In the 1928 and 1932 games it was presented as an exhibition, becoming official in 1936. The female version first came to the Olympics in 1976, and professional athletes were only allowed to compete starting in the 1992 Games, when the famous American “Dream Team” took the gold medal.
Basketball is practiced by two teams of five players and the objective is to get the ball in a basket, placed on a backboard that can be used to help the movement of the ball. Originally, the basket was a literal basket used during harvest of peaches and the backboard was used to keep the ball from hitting spectators.
