The Americans ended up with 269.952 points far behind gold medal winners China (275.997) who won their second consecutive Olympic title and third in four games. Japan took silver (271.952) and hosts Great Britain claimed bronze (271.711). The final positions were reviewed after Japan protested the results.

Britain was initially announced as the silver medalist, setting off raucous celebrations. But Japan filed an inquiry over the score of three-time world champion Kohei Uchimura on the pommel horse, the team's last routine.

After judges spent about five minutes reviewing the routine, his score was revised and Japan was awarded the silver medal with Britain getting bumped down to bronze which gives them their first medal in a century.

United States had big expectations after finishing first in qualifying. They were hoping to win their first Olympic title since Los Angeles 1984.
