It is frequently used by “Club Estudiantes “and by “Club Gimnasia y Esgrima” to play home matches. The venue was opened in 2003 with a capacity of 53,000 people and it is considered one of the most modern stadiums in Latin America.
It will be the main venue for the Copa América 2011 that will be held in Argentina for the first time in 24 years. The most important matches will be played here: the opening match for Group A, a match for Group B and one for Group C, one quarterfinals match, and the semifinal and third place matches.
The stadium cost around 100 million dollars. It was reopened this year after some alterations such as the installation of a roof to shelter the seats and stands.
